Costco is expanding beyond its warehouse-attached fuel pumps with its first-ever stand-alone gas station, set to open this summer in Mission Viejo, California. A second location is planned for Honolulu, Hawaii, marking a deliberate push by the retailer to extend its fuel offering independently of its membership warehouses.

The Mission Viejo site, located at 25732 El Paseo roughly 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles, is expected to open in late June according to city officials. It occupies the former footprint of a Bed Bath & Beyond that was approved for demolition last year to make way for the project. The station will feature 20 fueling dispensers — equivalent to 40 individual pumping positions — under a 17,234 square-foot fueling canopy that also houses staff facilities. It will operate daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., exclusively for Costco members.

The Hawaii location is planned for the Kapālama Kai community in Honolulu, on land owned by Kamehameha Schools. Demolition and site preparation began in October 2025 and are ongoing, with the station expected to open in 2027.

The move addresses a persistent pain point for Costco members: the warehouse-attached gas stations have long been known for lengthy queues, congested parking lots, and traffic spill onto surrounding streets. A stand-alone format, without the draw of a full warehouse, could meaningfully improve the fueling experience.

Costco’s fuel pricing is typically among the most competitive in any given area — a key membership perk. In the Mission Viejo area, local gas prices range from around $5.69 to $6.35 per gallon, while the two nearest existing Costco stations in Laguna Niguel and Laguna Marketplace are both listing fuel at $5.69. In Honolulu, local prices run between $5.14 and $5.59 per gallon, compared to $4.14 at the existing Costco in Iwilei.
