Google is investing $10 million in the Manufacturing Institute to launch artificial intelligence training for 40,000 U.S. manufacturing workers, FOX Business reported. The funding, sourced from Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund, supports the nonprofit affiliate of the National Association of Manufacturers in developing a new AI curriculum.
Maggie Johnson, global head of Google.org, stated that the initiative builds on Google’s existing technology partnerships with the industry. The program will adapt Google’s AI training for manufacturing contexts, offering courses such as “AI 101 for Manufacturing” and a newly developed “Advanced AI for Manufacturing Technicians.” These courses aim to equip apprentices and current employees with essential skills, from data analysis to engineering applications, tailored for shop-floor scenarios.
The Manufacturing Institute plans to expand its Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) chapters to at least 15 new regions, embedding the advanced AI training across all locations. Carolyn Lee, president of the Manufacturing Institute, emphasized that the training addresses the projected shortfall of 1.9 million manufacturing jobs by 2033. By demystifying AI and demonstrating its role in augmenting human labor rather than replacing it, the program seeks to reduce workforce anxiety and enhance operational efficiency.
