Planned Moxy hotel next to Castle Buildings

Revised plans for a £25 million hotel in Hull city centre have been submitted to the council, with Moxy confirmed as the operator under Marriott International.

Developer Wykeland already held planning permission for a hotel on the site near Connexin Live arena. With the brand now confirmed, revised proposals have been lodged to reflect Moxy’s specifications.

The development would occupy a plot adjacent to the restored Castle Buildings and the former Earl de Grey pub. The broader Myton Street area, identified in the council’s City Centre Vision as a prime regeneration opportunity, would also encompass the former Staples store site.

Planning was originally granted in 2019 for a nine-storey, 150-bed hotel. The revised scheme proposes a seven-storey building with 122 bedrooms.

“The hotel’s location, on the doorstep of the Connexin Live arena and close to Hull’s city centre, marina, Fruit Market and Old Town, makes it ideal for both leisure and business visitors,” said Jonathan Stubbs, Wykeland’s development director. “This hotel will be a hugely popular addition to the city centre, bringing wider economic benefits and new jobs.”

Moxy operates across 130 locations in more than 25 countries. Its UK portfolio includes properties in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast. International destinations span Bangkok, Shanghai, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Lisbon.

Molly Turpie, senior manager, international hotel development at Marriott, said: “Hull is a city with a strong cultural identity and growing visitor appeal, making it an ideal location for Moxy’s playful, design-led approach.”

Market research commissioned by Wykeland showed Hull’s city centre hotels reach full occupancy on 100 nights each year, leaving prospective visitors with no option but to seek accommodation outside the city. If approved, the development would be Hull’s first new hotel in nearly a decade.
