Roadchef is set to invest over 300 million pounds across its UK motorway service network after securing 75-year lease extensions on five key sites, signaling growing investor confidence in roadside infrastructure as a critical piece of the country’s transport future.
The agreement with National Highways and the Department for Transport covers major locations including Clacket Lane, Watford Gap, Northampton, Sandbach, and Strensham — providing long-term certainty for planned upgrades.
EV Charging at the Core
Electric vehicle infrastructure anchors the investment strategy. Roadchef aims to expand charging capacity to approximately 1,000 bays across its sites by 2030, with a focus on ultra-rapid chargers designed for long-distance travel.
Motorway service areas are expected to play a pivotal role in Britain’s transition to zero-emission transport, providing essential charging points for both private motorists and commercial fleets.
Upgrades for HGV Drivers
The company is targeting significant improvements for heavy goods vehicle drivers, a sector contributing roughly 170 billion pounds to the UK economy. Planned upgrades include expanded parking, enhanced catering, upgraded shower facilities, improved security, and high-speed internet connectivity.
Retail and Hospitality Expansion
Roadchef is broadening its retail partnerships. Existing arrangements with brands such as McDonald’s, Costa Coffee, Pret A Manger, and WHSmith will be complemented by new additions to improve convenience for travellers.
Chief Executive Tim Gittins called the lease extensions a major milestone that positions the company to invest confidently in both current operations and future growth.
A Public-Private Success Story
The deal illustrates how public agencies and private investors can collaborate effectively. National Highways representative Elliot Shaw said the agreement would support safer, more sustainable travel, while Keir Mather emphasized the broader economic benefits of enhanced charging infrastructure.
Serving more than 46 million customers annually across 31 locations, Roadchef’s network sits at the intersection of immediate operational needs and long-term structural shifts in the UK economy.
